English Abstract

Pitting corrosion is a very common type of corrosion found in oil and gas industry during drilling and production because of its harsh environment. Pits are preferential areas for cracks when downhole tools subjected to varying stress level. Failure is a big issue which needs to be managed more efficiently to reduce both direct and indirect cost. One part of controlling this cost is selecting good resistant material to pitting corrosion while maintaining other thermal and mechanical properties. In this study, the susceptibility of 15% Chromium Manganese stainless steel to pitting corrosion in NaCl brine at different pH values, temperatures and Cl- content was investigated. Open circuit potential and cyclic polarization were used and the specimens were inspected under optical microscope after the test for topography. The study showed that rising the temperature causes Epit to increase and Erep to decrease at pH 6 and Cl- concentration of 4M. In general, the relationship between Pitting susceptibility factor and temperature is directly proportional. It also showed that Cl- concentration affects the resistance of CrMn SS inversely and the effect is more significant at lower pH. Both electrochemical and microscopic inspection converged to have the same conclusion; CrMn SS has good resistance to pitting corrosion at lower temperature and at higher pH. It is recommended to be used in higher pH, lower temperature and lower Cl- applications.
