English Abstract
Oil–water interfaces containing ionizable amphiphiles govern processes central to EOR, emulsion control, liquid–liquid extraction, and environmental remediation, yet their predictive design remains constrained by an incomplete mechanistic connection between adsorption, acid–base speciation, metal-ion association, and mass transfer. This thesis develops a chemically resolved framework for understanding how carboxylic acids and divalent cations regulate IFT, molecular organization, and dynamic equilibration at liquid–liquid interfaces. The thesis further establishes pH as a governing variable because it controls the availability of interfacial carboxylate sites and thereby shifts the interface from weak adsorption to screening-dominated or complexation-enhanced regimes. Dynamic interfacial measurements across carboxylic acids of varying hydrophobicity, together with weak-base experiments, show that pH, acid strength, and oil–water partitioning jointly determine whether amphiphiles adsorb, transfer, deplete, re-adsorb, or re-equilibrate. Dodecanoic acid is used as a model oil-soluble carboxylic acid to examine how transition metal cations (e.g., zinc) modify interfacial adsorption and surfactant efficiency. Pendant drop tensiometry, Frumkin–Davies adsorption analysis, DFT, COSMO-RS calculations, and vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy collectively show that zinc does not behave as a simple electrolyte. Instead, it operates through a coverage-dependent mechanism: under sparse acid coverage, zinc promotes carboxylate association and anchors interfacial molecules, whereas under dense acid coverage it screens electrostatic repulsion, enhances lateral organization, and produces a more ordered interfacial film. Extending the study to alkaline-earth divalent cations reveals that cation identity controls the balance between hydration-limited electrostatic screening and specific carboxylate complexation. In this comparison, zinc exhibits a distinct capacity for carboxylate-specific interfacial organization, while the alkaline-earth cations act primarily through hydration and charge-screening effects. Overall, this work converts empirical interfacial formulation into a mechanistic design framework in which cation identity, electronic structure, hydration, molecular hydrophobicity, and acid–base speciation become explicit variables for controlling chemically responsive liquid–liquid interfaces.
