English Abstract
Growing demand for light olefins, particularly propylene and ethylene, underscores the need for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) additives capable of processing heavier, more complex crude feedstocks. Effective cracking of such feeds requires catalysts with optimized acidity, hydrothermal stability, and accessible pores that allow the diffusion of bulky polyaromatic molecules to the active sites of the catalyst. In the present study, hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by postsynthesis desilication with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) at varying treatment temperatures and time. These zeolites, alongside the untreated parent zeolite, were evaluated as FCC additives for the catalytic cracking of Arab Extra Light crude oil. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR. Catalytic performance was assessed in a fixed-bed microactivity test (MAT) unit at 650 °C using a catalyst-to-oil ratio of 5. The zeolite treated at 100 °C for 3 h (Z3100) exhibited superior catalytic performance compared to its counterparts treated at 50 °C for 3 and 6 h (Z350 and Z650). This superiority can be attributed to its preserved acidity and higher mesopore volume compared to the other treated zeolites. The highest feed conversion (90.94 %) and gasoline yield (45.01 wt.%) were attained using this catalyst. However, none of the treated zeolites achieved a higher light olefin yield than the untreated parent zeolite. This limitation may be attributed to underdeveloped mesoporosity and the reduced acidity resulting from acid-site removal during the desilication process.
