English Abstract
Dry reforming of ethane (DRE) offers a promising route for the simultaneous utilization of carbon dioxide and ethane to produce synthesis gas, thereby combining greenhouse-gas conversion with the valorization of ethane-rich feedstocks. However, the practical application of DRE remains limited by the high operating temperature, catalyst deactivation through carbon deposition and sintering, and competing reactions that influence syngas selectivity and methane formation. This study combined experimental catalyst evaluation with computational adsorption analysis to investigate the performance of CeO₂-supported metal catalysts and clarify the roles of the active metal, metal loading, metal–support interface, and oxygen vacancies during DRE. CeO₂-supported Rh, Ni, Fe, W, and Zr catalysts were prepared by impregnation and characterized using complementary physicochemical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption, temperature-programmed reduction, desorption, and oxidation analyses. Their catalytic performance was evaluated between 500 and 650 °C, with particular emphasis on comparing 2 wt% Rh/CeO₂ with Ni/CeO₂ catalysts containing different Ni loadings. Experimental observations were interpreted using machine-learned interatomic-potential screening followed by density functional theory recalculations of selected intermediates on pristine and oxygen-deficient CeO₂ surfaces; the metal-decorated surfaces were evaluated with UMA. Among the investigated catalysts, 2 wt% Rh/CeO₂ exhibited the highest activity, achieving greater than 99% ethane conversion and 77% CO₂ conversion at 650 °C. Its superior performance was associated with the early formation of metallic Rh⁰, good metal dispersion, and strong cooperation between Rh sites and the redox-active CeO₂ support. Rh/CeO₂ also showed high stability and low carbon accumulation, although a small amount of methane was formed because of the relatively strong adsorption of hydrogen and methyl intermediates. Ni/CeO₂ catalysts showed increasing ethane conversion with increasing Ni loading, with 15 wt% Ni/CeO₂ providing the best performance among the Ni-based samples. The Ni catalysts exhibited high selectivity toward H₂ and CO and strongly suppressed methane formation, although gradual deactivation and greater carbon deposition were observed during extended operation. Fe-, W-, and Zr-based catalysts, as well as bare CeO₂, displayed substantially lower activity under identical conditions. The computational results were qualitatively consistent with the experimental activity trend of Rh/CeO₂ > Ni/CeO₂ ≫ CeO₂. Rh ensembles more strongly stabilized ethane-derived intermediates involved in C–H and C–C bond activation, which may help rationalize their higher experimental activity. In contrast, the more moderate adsorption of CHₓ and H species on Ni was qualitatively consistent with the lower methane formation observed experimentally. The calculations indicated that oxygen vacancies selectively stabilize CO₂-derived and oxygenated intermediates, which may be relevant to CO₂ activation and oxygen-transfer pathways. Overall, the results suggest that catalytic performance in DRE is governed not simply by adsorption strength, but by the balance between hydrocarbon activation, hydrogenation, oxygen mobility, and carbon-removal pathways. Rh/CeO₂ provides the highest activity and coke resistance, whereas highly loaded Ni/CeO₂ represents a more economical alternative with favorable syngas selectivity and minimal methane production.
