English Abstract

Conventionally, as valuable platform chemicals in the petrochemical industry, light olefins (such as ethylene and propylene) are produced via industrial steam cracking and fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) of naphtha as side products. However, these processes are highly energy-intensive and suffer rapid catalyst deactivation. Accordingly, in the quest to develop on-purpose olefins production technology, the simultaneous valorization of anthropogenic CO2 and large underutilized light alkanes (C2-C4) in shale gas and associated petroleum gas in the United States and the Middle East, respectively, presents a highly promising green alternative. The route involves CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of the feedstock (CO2-ODH) with zero direct H2 input. Thus, in the present work, we developed novel vanadium-based catalysts via solvent- and template-free strategies for CO2-ODH of propane to propylene in an automated fixed-bed microactivity reactor. Typically, the concept of active site diversity was utilized to develop series of mesoporous boron-modified VOx/Al2O3 catalysts, and AlVO7B (composed of 5 and 7 wt.% of V and B, respectively) exhibited a remarkable 51% propane conversion, ~32% yield to propylene, and less than 20% CO selectivity at 650 oC after 12 h time on stream. From NH3 desorption, it was evident that the incorporation of boron active component adequately regulated the concentration and strength of the available acid sites, thus suppressed the chances for undesired cracking and overoxidation reaction pathways. Moreover, Raman and TGA analysis revealed small coke formation over the catalyst. Also, the catalyst was further evaluated in a CREC riser simulator, and a kinetic model developed has fairly-fitted the acquired experimental data with a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.95). On another perspective, V-based catalysts supported on commercial montmorillonite (MontV) and magnesium oxide (MgV) were synthesized via thorough grinding of the active components using mortar and pestle. The MontV and MgV catalysts exhibited good CO2-ODH performance, however, with well-above 30 % CO selectivity. Rationally, we exploited spatial effects via controlled integration of the supports to improve the catalytic performance. Consequently, Mont(MgV) catalyst developed via physical grinding of MgV with montmorillonite displayed outstanding catalytic performance, with around 31 % yield to propylene without observable deactivation for 12 h time on stream (TOS). Overall, the present investigation provides a new design template for development of efficient CO2-ODH catalysts via utilizing green and sustainable precursors coupled with environmentally friendly protocols. Besides, a detailed thermodynamic study has been conducted to understand the influence of key process variables and delineate the complex interplay among the individual reactions involved in the CO2-ODH reaction network. Moreover, the thermodynamic simulation revealed some critical design requirements that are vital in the development of CO2-ODH catalysts.
