English Abstract

Crude oil is blended with unwanted mixture of dispersed water droplets, salts and sediments with continuous oil phase during recovery and transportation. Natural emulsifiers present in the oil provided with applied force on the water and oil mixture lead to the formation of stable emulsion. Therefore demulsification of crude oil becomes an utmost priority to achieve the desired purity of quality. To get an understanding of demulsification it is important to get a grasp of emulsion stability and factors affecting it so a study on diesel-water emulsion was carried out .Diesel-in-water emulsions have been proposed as an alternative fuel due to its potential to emit lesser amount of nitrogen oxides and particulate matters in the current models of compressed ignition engines. The Diesel-in-water emulsions are not very well understood despite its numerous applications. In this work, water/diesel emulsions were prepared using octylphenol ethoxylate as an emulsifier at different mixing time and speeds, varying surfactant concentrations, and using different water/diesel ratios. The emulsion stability was evaluated using bottle test method, droplet size distribution (microscope), and rheological measurements. It was found that emulsion stability not only depends on concentration of surfactant, water, and diesel but also on mixing speed and time.An optimum surfactant concentration was noted to get the most stable emulsions. The current study indicated that water to diesel ratio and mixing method can significantly affect the emulsion characteristics. Taking away the key points from the factors affecting the stability of emulsion, procession towards demulsification of crude oil was carried out with the help of polymeric demulsifiers. Even though many chemical agents have been prepared to function as demulsifier, the quest to develop biodegradable, non-toxic and environmental friendly demulsifier is priority due to global climate issues. This research is based on investigating the dehydration efficiency of different polymeric demulsifiers involving biodegradable grades of ethyl cellulose of different viscosities grades (EC-4,EC-22 and EC-100) as well as triblock polymer in shape of Pluronic F-127 (Pf-127) mixed with solvent through bottle test. Moreover the influence of demulsifier concentration , effect of different salts, impact of sea water (SW) and finally the effect of temperature are evaluated by demulsification efficiency of W/CO emulsion. Experimental results reveal that EC-4 and Pf-127 at optimal concentration of 10000ppm are efficient to break the emulsion when it comes to demulsification tests involving emulsions prepared with either distilled water or sea water both at room temperature and at 90ᵒC, coming up with 99% and 92% efficiency respectively. EC-22 and EC-100 were not found to be effective demulsifier for breaking W/CO emulsion.Usage of divalent salts (〖Ca〗^(+2 ),〖Mg〗^(+2)) with distilled water to produce a W/CO emulsion at room temperature resulted in findings that application of different grades of ethyl cellulose as demulsifier suitable for the separation of water and oil while on the other hand usage of monovalent salt (〖Na〗^+)got the best out of Pf-127 as demulsifier The presence of sea water in the emulsion was found to accelerate its demulsification due to better floc formation. Influence of elevated temperature can be observed in the fact that the demulsification is enhanced at 90ᵒC as compared to that of the room temperature for any given demulsifier concentration. The combination of high temperature and appropriate salt as well as applying proper solvent results is the key for selecting an appropriate polymeric demulsifier and its dosage for the separation of water and crude oil. The application of ionic liquids (IL’s) as demulsifiers for the separation of water in crude oil emulsions possess a high potential in petroleum industry. The sole motive of this research is to investigate the four IL’s of the class of pyridinium compound such as [1,4bmPY][BF4] ,[1,4bmPY][PF6] [1,4bmPY][I] and [1,3p-CN-PY][Cl] with maximum alkyl lenght up to short butyl chain .The ILs were evaluated for demulsification efficiency of the emulsion on the basis of parameters such as IL’s dosage ranging from 200ppm to 2000ppm, effect of anion ,effect of cation and alkyl chain length as well as influence of seawater at temperature of 90ᵒC. The results indicated that the more hydrophobic ILs like [1,4bmPY][PF6] and [1,4bmPY][BF4] comprising longer cation and alkyl chain length were found to be favoring high demulsification efficacy as high as 99% for [1,4bmPY][PF6].The use of sea water was found to accelerate as well improve of demulsification efficiency for all the IL’s.
