English Abstract

This study investigates catalytic performance of a novel fluidizable La2O3 modified MOx/γ-Al2O3 for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane to propylene with and without CO2. The mixed oxide of lanthanum and aluminium support was synthesized by the coprecipitation technique and the active site MOx was deposited on the support by the incipient wetness impregnation technique. Results from the catalyst N2 adsorption, NH3-TPD and XRD characterization reveal that the incorporation of La2O3 above 25 wt% reduces the catalyst BET surface area, surface acidity and the diffraction peak intensities corresponding to γ-Al2O3 respectively. In addition, the H2-TPR data for the molybdenum-based catalyst shows two distinct reduction peaks establishing that the MoO3 reduces in two stages of Mo6+ → Mo4+ →Mo0, however, the vanadium-based catalyst reduced in a single stage. The N2 adsorption isotherm and the pore size distribution curves shows that the catalyst materials were mesoporous in nature. The ODH of propane reaction was carried out in the CREC riser simulator by injecting propane with or without CO2 as co-feed. The performance of the synthesized catalyst for the ODH of propane was found to be a function of the La2O3 content of the support. In general, the propane conversion declined slightly whiles the propylene selectivity increased as the La2O3 content increases. It was hypothesized that the presence of basic La2O3 reduces the acidity and the non-selective sites of γ-Al2O3 responsible for deep oxidation of reactant and products on the catalyst. Based on our results, 32% propane conversion with 78% propylene selectivity were achieved over 10% MoO3/La-γAl2O3 (1:2) in the absence of CO2 at 550 ℃, however, in the presence of CO2, 52% propane conversion and 85% propylene selectivity were obtained on the same catalyst at the same reaction conditions. A similar observation was recorded for both vanadium and gallium-based catalyst.
