English Abstract

Microalgae driven nutrients removal from tertiary wastewater is receiving increasing interest. In this study, a freshwater microalga Scenedesmus dimorphus species has been considered for nutrient removal from the tertiary stage of municipal wastewater. In addition, CO2 biofixation, and concomitant production of lipid containing microalgae biomass are also studied. Batch experiments were performed using synthetic wastewater samples with different nitrogen to phosphorus (NP) ratio (1:1 to 8:1) and CO2 concentrations (~ 0%, 2% , 4%, 6% CO2 in air). In general, microalgae biomass increased gradually during the growth phase of 25-day cultivation period for all trials. NP ratio of 2:1 at pH 7.23 revealed highest biomass yield 733 mg/L than that of others NP ratio when microalga was cultured with 2% CO2 supplementation . The microalga showed the capability to uptake nitrogen and phosphorus for all cases under the experimental conditions of this study. Percentage removal of total nitrogen was in the range of 28% to 100% based on the different levels NP ratio and CO2 enrichment. Total phosphorus removal ranged from 17% to 57% for initial concentration of 13 mg/L considering all trials NP ratios and all CO2 addition to the culture medium. Microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus for CO2 biofixation coupling with tertiary municipal wastewater treatment can be a considerable option for CO2 bio-mitigation for some instances. Maximum CO2 biofixation rate 49.6 mg L-1 d-1 was achieved at NP ratio of 8:1 with 4% CO2 supplementation in the culture medium. Microalgae cultivation with CO2 supplementation have a considerable effect on lipid accumulation in microalgae biomass than cultivation without CO2 enrichment. Maximum lipid content was achieved 31.6% as dry weight of biomass at 1:1 NP ratio when microalgae was cultivated with 6% CO2 enrichment in air. Therefore, these findings favor the possibility of nutrient removal from tertiary municipal wastewater using microalga Scenedesmus dimorphus along with lipid biosynthesis for biofuel production.
