English Abstract

Zincosilicates with MFI structure were synthesized by the hydrothermal crystallization method. A set of five samples was synthesized having a bulk-solid Zn/Si ratio ranging from 0.027 to 0.087, as determined by ICP-AS. The MFI-crystalline phase of the zincosilicates was verified by XRD. SEM micrographs of the samples showed a mixture of typically encountered MFI-crystal morphology; agglomerates of intergrown hexagonal crystals of various sizes along with some single crystals in the low Zn/Si samples. The substitution of zinc into the silicalite-I framework was established by FTIR. Upon calcination, the framework zinc atoms were found to dislodge into the pores and channels of the silicalite. The results of the ammonia-TPD studies of the calcined samples reflected a near equivalence of the acid strength distribution in the zincosilicates. The dispersion of zinc in the calcined zincosilicates, assessed by employing XPS, was found to be higher than that of zinc particles formed in a molar-equivalent, zinc impregnated silicate catalysts. A bench scale continuous flow reactor system was designed and fabricated for the activity evaluation of the catalysts in n-butane dehydrogenation reaction. The larger zinc agglomerates formed in the zinc impregnated silicalite catalysts were found to be active in n-butane dehydrogenation, whereas the small zinc particles formed in the crystallized zincosilicate catalysts were not. The performance of the two types of zincsilicates as supports for platinum based dehydrogenating catalysts was evaluated in n-butane dehydrogenation reaction, and compared to that of pure silicalite. The zincosilicate as found to suppress the hydrogenolysis activity of platinum extensively, thereby, retarding the catalyst's deactivation by coke formation. On the other hand, the reduction in the hydrogenolyis activity of platinum by the zinc-impregnated silicate occurred to a lesser extent, which led to the rather fast catalyst deactivation.
