English Abstract

Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) is widely used in Saudi Arabia for desalinated water production; however, its recovery is strongly affected by feedwater salinity, especially in high-salinity regions such as the Arabian Gulf. Osmotically Assisted Reverse Osmosis (OARO) has recently been proposed as an advanced membrane process for treating high-salinity brine streams and improving water recovery. This thesis evaluates an innovative and economical approach for integrating OARO with an existing SWRO system to improve water recovery under high-salinity seawater conditions. The study was conducted using a real SWRO case study, IMSDesign simulation, a mathematical model, and available OARO pilot performance data. The experimental setup included a pilot-scale OARO unit used to evaluate the treatment of SWRO brine, and the production of a saline permeate stream that can be recycled and blended with the incoming seawater feed. IMSDesign was used to simulate the SWRO train under Red Sea and Arabian Gulf feedwater conditions xvii because it provides membrane-manufacturer-based performance predictions, including feed pressure, recovery, and system feasibility. In parallel, a mathematical model based on mass balance, salt balance, osmotic pressure, and net driving pressure relationships was developed to evaluate the effect of feed salinity on SWRO performance and to estimate the impact of OARO permeate recycling on the mixed feed salinity. These methods were used together to compare the baseline Red Sea operation, the high-salinity Arabian Gulf case, and the proposed integrated SWRO OARO configuration. The main parameters investigated were feed salinity, permeate flow rate, brine flow rate, recovery ratio, reject salinity, mixed feed salinity, net driving pressure, specific energy consumption, and unit production cost. The novelty of this study is that OARO is not evaluated only as a brine concentration process, but as a feed-dilution strategy, where OARO permeate is recycled and blended with Arabian Gulf seawater before the SWRO high-pressure pump to reduce the effective SWRO feed salinity. This approach is particularly relevant to high-salinity seawater regions such as the Arabian Gulf, where the feed salinity can reach approximately 60,000 mg/L, compared with the Red Sea case-study salinity of approximately 42,634 mg/L. The case-study SWRO system was originally designed under Red Sea conditions, where it achieved 40% recovery and produced 600 m3/day per RO train. When the same SWRO train was evaluated under Arabian Gulf salinity of 60,000 mg/L, the recovery decreased to approximately 15.56% and the permeate production decreased to approximately 233 m3/day. After integrating OARO, the mixed SWRO feed salinity xviii was reduced from 60,000 mg/L to approximately 52,000 mg/L, which improved SWRO recovery to about 26.5%. When the same OARO permeate-recycling strategy was evaluated under Red Sea conditions, the mixed SWRO feed salinity increased from 42,634 to approximately 44,086 mg/L, reducing the SWRO recovery from 40.00% to approximately 37.96%. Economically, the proposed configuration reduced the estimated Unit Production Cost (UPC) from 3.26 SR/m3 for the Gulf SWRO-only case to 1.92 SR/m3 for the integrated Gulf SWRO-OARO case, while the Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) decreased from 7.07 to 4.15 kWh/m3. The results indicate that integrating OARO with SWRO can partially recover the performance loss caused by high Arabian Gulf salinity, reduce seawater intake and pretreatment requirements, and improve the economic feasibility of desalination in high-salinity coastal regions.
