English Abstract

Cementitious sensors are an important development in structural health monitoring because they provide a practical way to integrate sensing capabilities into construction materials. In addition, using local and recycled materials is considered a sustainable approach, as it helps reduce cost, minimize environmental impact, and support resource conservation in civil engineering applications. This thesis investigates the electrical and mechanical properties of cementitious composites prepared with two types of garnet: original garnet (G90) and recycled garnet (G150). Each garnet was used as a partial replacement for natural sand at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement levels to assess its effect on composite properties. Moreover, hybrid mixtures containing both G150 and G90 were also prepared at replacement ratios of (12.5%–12.5%), (25%–25%), (37.5%–37.5%), and (50%–50%) to evaluate the combined influence of the two materials. The performance of these mixes was compared with a control mix without garnet replacement. To further improve the electrical response, 0.5% graphene nanotubes were incorporated into the hybrid mix with the 25%–25% replacement ratio. In the final stage of the study, the cementitious sensor formed from this graphene-enhanced mix was embedded in reinforced concrete columns to assess its performance under realistic structural conditions. Two embedding configurations were examined: one sensor at the middle of the column and another with two sensors at one-third positions from the top and bottom. The findings show that the use of locally sourced and recycled garnet materials, together with graphene nanotubes, can enhance the electrical, mechanical, and sensing properties of cementitious composites. The study also confirms the potential of these materials for developing practical cementitious sensors for real structural applications.
