English Abstract

The transition toward low-carbon power generation has positioned hydrogen-enriched methane combustion as a promising pathway for cleaner and more efficient gas turbine operation. In this work, a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation of hydrogen-enriched methane–air flames in a Dual Annular Counter Rotating Swirl (DACRS) combustor, focusing on the coupled effects of hydrogen enrichment and fuel air stratification on static stability, thermoacoustic behavior, flame macrostructure, and pollutant emissions. The effect of hydrogen enrichment from 0% to 40% by volume was experimentally examined for both jet and swirl flame configurations. Hydrogen addition significantly extended the lean operability, improving the lean blowout (LBO) limit by 39% in jet flames and 43% in swirl flames at 40% hydrogen. Flames became progressively more compact, shorter, and better anchored with higher hydrogen content. Jet flames remained thermoacoustically stable across all hydrogen fractions due to the absence of coupling between acoustic pressure and heat release fluctuations, while swirl flames remained stable under lean conditions (φg ≤ 0.7) but became increasingly susceptible to thermoacoustic instability at higher hydrogen fractions and richer conditions. Emission measurements revealed substantial CO reductions of 67% in jet flames and 80% in swirl flames at 40% hydrogen, accompanied by a moderate rise in NOx attributable to elevated flame temperatures and thermal NOx pathways. Furthermore, fuel air stratification (SR = 1 to 3) was investigated for a 20% hydrogen-enriched methane swirl flame. Stratification also enhanced static stability, lowering the LBO limit by 16% at SR = 3, as the inner rich reaction zone acted as a pilot flame supporting radical diffusion to the outer lean region. Thermoacoustic instability observed at SR = 1 above φg = 0.8 was completely suppressed at SR = 3. However, stratification introduced a stability emission trade-off. CO emissions remained low (≤10 ppm) at φg ≤ 0.7 but rose by approximately 13 times on average at higher equivalence ratios. In addition, NOx emissions increased by 3 times at SR = 2 and 4.5 times at SR = 3, reaching a peak of 106 ppm at SR = 3 for φg = 0.9. In addition to stratification, inner inlet enrichment delivered the greatest improvement, reducing the lean blowout (LBO) limit by approximately 33%, while both inlet enrichment showed a moderate 16% reduction and outer inlet enrichment exhibited negligible change. Inner inlet enrichment also produced the most intense and firmly anchored inner core flame macrostructure while both inlet enrichment yielded a balanced flame with uniform blue chemiluminescence. Outer inlet enrichment resulted in a brighter outer region but weaker inner core and reduced anchoring. For thermoacoustic behavior, both inlet and outer inlet enrichment exhibited strong coupling with dominant peaks near 530 Hz whereas inner inlet enrichment effectively suppressed instabilities across most of the operating range. Finally, emission characteristics revealed a clear trade-off. Inner inlet enrichment produced the highest CO (~120 ppm) and NOx (~95 ppm) at φg = 0., while both inlet enrichment offered the lowest CO with moderate NOx and outer inlet enrichment yielded the lowest NOx among the three strategies. Numerical simulation has been used to analyze the combined effects of hydrogen fraction (0–40%) and stratification ratio (1–3) at a fixed global equivalence ratio. Hydrogen enrichment transformed the flame from a wide, elongated V-shape to a compact, anchored M-shape, with the peak temperature reaching 1870 K at 40% hydrogen. CO and CO₂ emissions decreased with hydrogen enrichment up to 30% due to enhanced OH-driven oxidation and reduced carbon content, with a slight CO rebound at 40% caused by thermal dissociation. NO emissions exhibited a non-linear trend, decreasing from 31 ppm at 0% hydrogen to a minimum at 20% before rising again at 30–40% as the thermal Zeldovich pathway was reactivated. Increasing stratification broadened and intensified the central high-temperature core, raising the axial peak temperature from 1810 K to 2150 K at 30% hydrogen, but elevated CO and NO emissions by 3 and 7 times, respectively, at SR = 3 compared to SR = 1. In summary, the experimental and numerical findings demonstrate that hydrogen enrichment combined with controlled stratification offers an effective strategy for extending lean operability, suppressing thermoacoustic instability, and reducing carbon-based emissions in swirl-stabilized combustion. If the primary concern is avoiding thermoacoustic failure and maintaining power flexibility, jet flame of 30–40% H2 can be a preferred operating configuration. If the primary concern is minimizing pollutant emissions while meeting moderate power demands, swirl flame of 20% H2 with moderate SR= 2-2.5, both inlets enrichment can be selected for ultra-lean operating conditions.
