English Abstract

The intrinsic formation factor is an important petrophysical parameter that describes the geometry and connectivity of the pore system in porous rocks. Traditionally, it is determined using multi-salinity laboratory experiments, which are time-consuming and require repeated sample preparation. Spectral Induced Polarization (SIP) provides an alternative approach by combining electrical conduction and polarization information. This study evaluates the use of SIP measurements to estimate the intrinsic formation factor in carbonate rocks using proportionality parameters λ and λm. Two independent datasets were analyzed: a published carbonate dataset and a laboratory dataset obtained from carbonate core samples. The performance of slope-based and grid-search approaches was compared under different salinity and frequency conditions. The results show that the grid-search approach consistently reduced estimation errors and increased the number of valid samples compared to the conventional slope-based method. The analysis also demonstrated that λ provides more consistent and reliable estimates than λm because it is less sensitive to frequency selection and simpler to implement. In addition, salinity was identified as one of the main factors controlling estimation accuracy, with higher salinity conditions producing more stable results. The laboratory dataset reproduced the principal trends observed in the published dataset, providing independent validation of the proposed methodology. Overall, the results demonstrate that SIP measurements combined with grid-search optimization provide a reliable framework for estimating the intrinsic formation factor in carbonate rocks.
