English Abstract
Early-age concrete is highly susceptible to earthquake disturbance because its microstructure is still developing during the setting and hardening stages. Crystalline admixtures (CA) are known to improve concrete properties through pore-blocking and self-healing mechanisms; however, their influence on early-age concrete subjected to seismic shaking has not been fully investigated. This study experimentally evaluates the effect of simulated earthquake shaking on the mechanical properties of early-age concrete containing crystalline admixture. Two concrete grades (M20 and M30) were prepared with four CA dosages (0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% by mass of cement). Simulated shaking based on the 1995 Kobe earthquake record with a peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.35 g was applied at 3 h, 6 h, 9 h, and 12 h after mixing, representing different stages of hydration and setting. Compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), water absorption, and microstructural characteristics were evaluated. The results showed that shaking applied between 6 h and 9 h caused the greatest reduction in mechanical properties. Without CA, the maximum compressive strength reduction reached 13.5%, while the maximum split tensile strength reduction reached 19.2% for M20 concrete. The incorporation of CA reduced the adverse effects of shaking and improved the overall performance of concrete. Among the investigated dosages, 1% CA showed the best overall compressive strength performance for M30 concrete, while 1.5% CA showed the best performance for M20 concrete. The addition of 1.5% CA to M20 concrete reduced the tensile strength loss from 19.2% to 7.2%. Furthermore, CA reduced water absorption in both control and shaken specimens. SEM observations revealed needle-like crystalline formations filling pores and microcracks in CA-modified concrete. Overall, the results demonstrate that crystalline admixture improves the resistance of early-age concrete to earthquake-induced disturbance through microstructural densification and pore-blocking mechanisms.
