English Abstract

The development of sustainable and high-performance adsorbents for wastewater treatment has attracted considerable attention due to increasing environmental pollution caused by industrial dye effluents. In this study, a novel polymer-functionalized graphene/red mud composite was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. Waste graphite was utilized as a low-cost carbon precursor for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) through a modified oxidation method, providing an environmentally beneficial approach for graphite waste valorization. The synthesized GO was subsequently functionalized with polyethylenimine (PEI) to enhance its surface functionality, adsorption active sites, and dispersion stability through the introduction of abundant amine groups. The prepared PEI–GO was then incorporated into red mud, an industrial by-product generated from alumina production, to fabricate a sustainable composite adsorbent with improved physicochemical properties. The synergistic interaction between PEI–GO and red mud significantly enhanced the adsorption performance toward methylene blue dye due to increased surface area, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions. The effects of operational parameters, including pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial dye concentration, were systematically investigated The developed composite demonstrated high adsorption efficiency and good regeneration capability over multiple adsorption–desorption cycles using an ethanol/acetic acid regeneration system. The findings highlight the potential of converting industrial and carbonaceous wastes into value-added functional materials for sustainable wastewater treatment applications
