English Abstract

Drinking water scarcity is a worldwide crisis that adversely affects the quality of life for millions of population on our planet. The best solution for that crisis is provided by desalination technologies. These technologies, however, suffer from high energy demand and low-performance issues. Recently, humidification-dehumidification (HDH) and adsorption-desalination (AD) technologies have attracted the interest of many researchers since they can be constructed on a small scale and driven by low-grade energy sources. Additionally, these technologies have an open door for various performance enhancement ways like multi-staging and heat recovery via integration with other systems. From this door comes the scope of this study in which the author proposes, develops, and validates novel HDH and AD systems that can contribute to the ultimate challenge of water scarcity. This study begins with a thermo-economic investigation of a novel system combining a triple-effect absorption (TEAB) heat pump and an HDH unit. The system is examined for the simultaneous production of freshwater and cooling effect. A detailed mathematical model is established, validated, and then used to explore the influence of different parameters on the TEAB-HDH system’s performance. It is revealed that the system can produce 10 kg/h of fresh water for 0.0085 $/l with a maximum gained-output-ratio (GOR) of 5.0. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the system is near 1.5. The system shows comparable performance to other hybrid HDH systems available in the literature. The above findings motivated the author to include the thermodynamic balancing method in AB-HDH systems for better performance enhancement. In this regard, this study adopts another investigation of novel systems in which single-effect absorption (SEAB) and double-effect absorption (DEAB) heat pumps are separately used to operate a balanced HDH unit. As observed, the SEAB-HDH unit can produce freshwater of up to 152.4 kg/h at a maximum GOR of 10, for 0.002 – 0.0058 $/l. While the DEAB-HDH system delivers up to 135.4 kg/h of freshwater for 0.0026 – 0.0098 $/l with a maximum GOR of 15. The SEAB- and the DEAB-HDH systems have COP values of 0.50 and 0.81, respectively. This study also examines a novel AD- HDH system to produce freshwater and cooling power. A validated thermo-economic model is used to explore the effect of different parameters on the system. The results reveal that 21.75 kg/h of fresh water can be produced for 0.0115 $/l with a GOR value of 2.62. The COP value of the system is recorded at 0.46. Afterward, a balanced HDH unit driven by a vapor-compression (VC) heat pump is investigated using a model that is validated by reported experimental data measured at KFUPM’s desalination lab. It is found that the system can deliver 7 – 40 kg/h of freshwater at a GOR value of 9 – 57 for 0.011 – 0.0026 $/l. Moreover, this study includes a thermo-economic analysis of a novel cascading AD system. The analysis includes parametric and multi-objective optimization investigations. The system’s COP reaches 1.6, and it can produce freshwater water of up to 70 l/day for 0.009 $/l. Finally, this work adopts a novel dimensionless study of an AD system in which various independent dimensionless parameters are introduced.
