English Abstract

Carbonate formations, candidates for acid fracturing, are usually naturally fractured. Therefore, the existence of fracture networks has an important impact on fracture design outcomes. This work develops a model to explain acid distribution in hydraulic and intersecting natural fractures. This model is then used to optimize acid fracture design parameters based on the goal of maximizing productivity. This research utilizes an in-house developed model that captures the complex interaction between hydraulic and natural fractures to calculate the conductivity outcomes of an acid fracturing design job at different reservoirs' natural fracture density. Furthermore, this model is integrated with an in-house productivity model to calculate productivity enhancement. As a result, it helps run a way higher number of sensitivities for various acid fracturing designs. A parametric study has been done to determine the impact of natural fractures on acid placement in the reservoir and compare productivity folds in cases with natural fractures with those without natural fractures. Also, to find the optimum design conditions (e.g., injection rate and volume) based on the natural fractures' characteristics and reservoir properties. Artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver a fast and dependable predictive model for fracture productivity enhancement. Three methods of AI were examined: support vector machine (SVM), fuzzy logic system (FLS), and Artificial neural network (ANN). The developed mathematical correlations from the selected artificial intelligence methods, notably the ANN, allowed easy and fast performance prediction. Additionally, AI models give reliable predictions of the productivity folds. For example, the artificial neural network model has a prediction error of 3.3%. In addition, an empirical equation has been obtained from the ANN model. The model developed here explains the complex interactions of acid fractures in naturally fractured carbonate formations. As a result, the effects of natural fractures on acid placement and optimum design conditions can now be estimated. Such information is imperative for better stimulation design in this type of formation, which has rarely been considered.
