English Abstract

Earthmoving operations are the core task in most heavy construction projects (e.g., highways constructions, dams, tunnels, etc.) that involve the utilization of heavy equipment. Heavy machinery is associated with high utilization costs that significantly impact the operation’s overall budget. Therefore, being able to find the optimized crew configuration that results in the least cost and/or schedule will assist contractors in successfully delivering such projects with the planned budget and schedule. Several mathematical and simulation optimization models have been developed for optimizing earthmoving operations. However, most of these optimization systems do not consider the dynamic changes of the fleet configuration as the project progresses. This thesis presents a simulation-based optimization model for earthmoving operations through finding the optimum crew configuration that results in the least cost and/or schedules taking into consideration the dynamic change of the fleet configuration as the project progresses. The presented system integrates a mathematical model which is based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) with a simulation model that employs Discrete Event Simulation (DES). The mathematical model provides the simulation model with the initial fleet configuration that was solved using MILP. While the DES model accounts for the uncertainties related to the cycle time, validate the mathematical model and find the final project cost, duration, and optimum fleet configurations for different cut-fill areas. To validate the developed system, three case projects were solved. Comparing the results obtained with our model and the literature models of the selected cases, there was a significant improvement in project cost by 7.029% for the first case project, 25.44% for the second, and 65.4% for the third. As for the project’s overall duration, the improvement percentage was 45.763% for the first case, 42.27% for the second case, and 20% for the third. Furthermore, the results reveal that the fleet configurations generated by the DES model are in agreement with those selected by the MILP model by 95.023%. The generated model can assist contractors in planning earthmoving operations and achieving the least possible cost while considering (1) available resources to the contractor, (2) the dynamic fleet configuration of the multi-cut-fill sites, (3) the optimum soil quantities to be moved between different cuts and fill sites, (4) project environmental and indirect costs, (5) queues at each cut and fill areas and (6) uncertainties associated with the dynamic behavior of the earthmoving operations.
