English Abstract

In this work, we report green and inexpensive water-soluble nanomaterial of carbon nanostructured – polymer composites partially aminated polyacrylic. Activated carbon and graphene as carbon hosts of the composites were performed in this study as inhibitors especially for drilling fluid additives. Melamine-modified polyacrylic grafted carbon nanostructure such as the Activated Carbon (C-g-AM) and Graphene (Gr-AM) successfully prepared as efficient shale inhibitors in the water-drilling fluid to hinder the shale hydration issues in oil and gas operation. The synthesized materials were investigated via several spectroscopic analyses including FTIR, TGA, and TEM. The inhibition capability of prepared materials was utilized through shale recovery of shale cuttings and anti-swelling ratio using sodium bentonite. SEM surface analysis of shale after shale recovery test containing 2 wt% prepared solutions was utilized to show the inhibition mechanism. The results showed that 2% of each entity significantly decreased water expansion into shale compared to KCl, a standard inhibitor whose use is prohibited owing to environmental concerns. The effectiveness of the composites is related to the synergistic plugging property of the core-centered carbon nanoparticles, which could plug the nanopores of the interlayer spacing of shale formation, as well as the ionic, hydrogen bonding, or hydrophobic characteristics of the composites' included polymer
