English Abstract

The industrial issues produced by technology development was leading to produce superhydrophobic/superoleophilic absorbents by utilizing commercial polyurethane foams (PUFs). The PUFs were modified with silica nanoparticles (Si) and stearic acid (SA) to remove oily and organic contaminants from oil/water mixtures and emulsion. Through ultrasonication and refluxing at 70 °C for 12 hours, PUF-Si-SA was generated by the facile dip-coating method. A great combination between carboxylates, hydroxyl, amine, and silica active surface can be investigated by several characterization techniques such as FTIR, TGA, XRD, TEM, SEM/EDX analysis of the developed materials. These results indicated that all components are uniformly distributed throughout the surface of the PUF. There was a superhydrophobicity up to 158° that has been observed in the water contact angle (WCA). Moreover, the modified PUFs exhibited the enhancement of the modified PUF absorption capacity up to 40 times from its initial mass, average separation efficiency above 98.0 % with higher permeated flux as much as 6000-7000 L.m-1h-2. Interestingly, this material was also can be further modified by PDA on its original PUF surface and produce the new PUF-PDA-Si-SA. This new material was performing better performance results and capability compared to PUF-Si-SA for all the separation and performance tests. Because these nanocomposite materials are capable of being a long-term performance and a thermally stable material under various and harsh environmental conditions, they could well represent as a promising absorbent in the future. Keywords: Polyurethane, nanocomposites, separation, superhydrophobic, emulsion, oil/water
