English Abstract

Hydrogen evolution using supported electrocatalysts is an emerging research area. Many studies demonstrate that the combination of the electrocatalysts with the right supports reduces the overpotential and thus enhances the overall efficiency of hydrogen production. As an example, transition metal-based and Pt-based electrocatalysts supported on carbon materials are synthesized, and they demonstrated high activity. However, scaling up these materials remains very challenging. Thus, it is essential to develop cheap and novel supports such as titanium nanotubes by anodization process that can be used on a large scale. Developing transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting and/or at least to minimize the loadings of noble metal-based electrocatalysts were also investigated. In addition, a hydrothermal process was applied to synthesize molybdenum sulfide electrocatalyst, and electrodeposition was also used to prepare cobalt oxyphosphide. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to characterize the synthesized materials. The efficacy of electrodes was demonstrated in electrochemical energy conversion applications by studying hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water splitting. The HER reactions were investigated both in acidic and basic electrolytes. The HER performance of all electrocatalysts was compared with that of benchmark commercial Pt/C. A detailed study elucidating electrode kinetics was performed, and the performance of the prepared electrocatalysts and supports was also correlated to the specific surface area, electrochemically active surface area (EASA) and electrical conductivity.
