English Abstract

The worldwide increase demand for oil and gas production led to an evolution in the drilling techniques to develop petroleum reservoirs and maximize oil and gas production. During the early 1980s, the revolution in highly inclined, multilateral, and long horizontal section drilling came into sight. The wellbore stability topic captured the attention to study the changes in rock geomechanics because of the new level of drilling practice. Studying the wellbore stability is so important, as the wellbore instability issues cause extra drilling costs about 10 to 15%. Therefore, studying the drilled sandstone petrophysical-geomechanical alterations due to the drilling fluid exposure will help to reduce the extra drilling costs for the wellbore instability problems. Drilling fluids with different additives will chemically interact with the reservoir rock and especially for the horizontal section as more exposure time between the rock and drilling fluids. These interactions will change the rock pore system, and consequently, geomechanical properties. Major changes in the drilling fluid design are highly required to mitigate these instability problems. In addition, field developments plans as perforation, hydraulic fracturing, and stimulation will be designed depending on the new values for the rock geomechanical properties. This research provides deep investigation and assessment for the pore system and geomechanics of Berea Buff sandstone formations after the exposure to the water-based mud by employing comprehensive experimental work as X-ray diffraction, filtration testing, spectrometry of nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscope, and sonic data acquisition, and scratch testing to study the impact of the downhole drilling conditions of extended exposure time, sandstone clay type and content, different weighting materials for the drilling fluid, mud filtrate impact, extended level of overbalance pressure, and the rock saturation condition influence on the rock-mud exposure process. The obtained results provided a strong evaluation for the rock strength weakening and elastic moduli changes behavior with every condition with a discussion about the pore system alterations as a causing mechanism for these alterations. The exposure time is the most critical parameter for the mud filtrate to affect the rock characteristics as the rock strength decreased by 19% for five days of exposure. The alterations in the elastic moduli showed that the sandstone rocks became stiffer and have lower deformability performance after the mud filtrate exposure. Clay type and quartz-clay framework were found to extremely affect the rock strength than the total clay content. Extending the overbalance pressure affects the mud filtration process and more filtrate was recorded that affect the rock strength deterioration with more solids precipitations. The oil-saturated samples showed the least impact for the rock strength while the dry rock sample has a severe strength reduction due to the mud filtrate-rock interactions. Future work is recommended to extend the proposed approach for carbonate rocks and Saudi formations and provide technical solutions for the field applications to preserve the rock geomechanics and protect the drilled formation from damage.
