English Abstract

Hydraulic fracturing is the process of injecting pressurized fluids to crack the formation open and improve hydrocarbon's well productivity. However, the conductivity of created fractures declines with time due to formation closure stresses. The decline is sharp in soft formations because of proppant embedment (propped fracture) or asperities failure (acid fracture), which minimizes the hydrocarbons production. Acid tends to weaken the rock strength further, resulting in fast rock failure and conductivity decline. The improvement in fracture surface hardness can mitigate the abovementioned challenges and sustain long-term fracture conductivity. This thesis work aims at improving the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks using different chemicals. Experiments were conducted to test the ability of ZnSO¬4, NaF, and DAP chemicals to improve the hardness of carbonate rocks at ambient temperature conditions. The effect of the chemical treatment on the mechanical and petrophysical properties of the rocks was assessed via several methodologies. The changes in rock texture and mineralogy after the treatment were investigated using SEM, XRD, and XPS. Moreover, the reaction kinetics between chemicals and rocks of different lithologies was analyzed using IC and ICP-OES. Chemicals that showed commendable performance in rock hardness improvement at ambient temperatures were tested at elevated temperatures to understand the degree of temperature effect and feasibility of using the chemicals at harsh reservoir conditions. It was found that all chemicals studied in this work can improve the hardness of the carbonate rock samples. The reaction of NaF with carbonate samples resulted in the formation of fluorite (CaF2). As a result of the reaction, the indentation hardness of limestone and chalk samples was improved by 3.8% and 6%, respectively. ZnSO4 treatment demonstrated better results causing improvement of chalk and limestone samples’ hardness (impulse hammering) by 21% and 17%. The treatment with DAP solution was observed to be the most promising in terms of rock consolidation. After treatment by DAP, the indentation hardness of chalk was increased by 30%, whereas up to 13% increment was achieved in the limestone sample. None of the treatments could improve the hardness of the dolomite sample due to the weak reactivity of this type of rock. Moreover, all treatments resulted in a decrease in the permeability of the rock samples. The experiments were repeated for DAP at high-temperature conditions, and it was observed that elevated temperatures positively affect the consolidation efficiency allowing to reach up to 100% hardness improvement.
