English Abstract

Seismic traces are essentially the reflections at the interfaces in subsurface formations generated by propagation of sound waves. The question is what these reflections mean in terms of rock properties. Traditionally, experts look at seismic reflections and start interpreting them in a qualitative way by mapping subsurface geology without quantifying the rock properties inside the strata, namely the porosity, mineralogy, and pore fluid. Structural and stratigraphic architecture of the subsurface formations such as folds, faults, and fractures are usually the products of such interpretation. The objective of this study is to conduct the needed quantitative interpretation by means of rock physics. Rock physics provides relations between various rock properties. In particular, rock physics relates the elastic properties to the petrophysical properties of the reservoir such as porosity, lithology, and pore fluid. A theoretical rock physics transform is used to obtain these relations by applying a transform between the elastic and volumetric rock properties to volumes of seismically derived impedances and density. This transform is called a rock physics model (RPM). Rock physics diagnostics (RPD), a methodology of establishing a RPM, is typically conducted on available wireline and core data. In this research, we examine wireline data from two clastic depositional environments: tight gas sandstones (TGS) in the continental US and high-porosity unconsolidated sand in Gulf of Mexico (GOM). First, we conduct the rock physics diagnostics by the use of theoretical fluid substitution to establish the relevant rock physics models (RPM). Once a RPM is determined, we upscale our well data to a seismic resolution to validate the consistency of selected model in the seismic scale. Next, by performing perturbational forward modelling, we use the established model to generate several geologically plausible pseudo-scenarios for these two cases. Finally, a ray-tracer synthetic seismic code is used to obtain the synthetic seismic signatures of these scenarios. The result is seismic reflection catalogues that can serve as field guides for interpreting these reflections, as well as to determine the seismic visibility of the aforementioned variations in the geometry of the reservoir, the pore fluid, and porosity variations.
