English Abstract

Cement production emits carbon dioxide, which contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. In the concrete industry attempts to produce cement-free concrete has resulted in the development of cementless alkali-activated concrete, which employs environmentally friendly alkali binders and is currently a major focus of research. Alkaline activated concrete (AAC) is an innovative green concrete that replaces cement by using waste materials that contain silica, alumina, and calcium oxide (CaO). This research aims to develop an AAC using GGBS, FA, and waste limestone powder (LSP) as precursor materials, activated by a combination of sodium silicate (SS) and sodium hydroxide (SH)-based alkaline activator and cured in water conditions. The LSP is a waste product generated from the asphalt manufacturing plant, which is rich in silica and has an activity index was 75 % at 28 days. The development of AAC involved investigations in three phases. In the first phase, twenty-four alkali-activated paste mixes were designed and prepared. The results show that the compressive strength of 100% LSP at 28 days was 20 MPa at 60 °C, 15 MPa at ambient, and 12 MPa at water curing conditions. The compressive strength for samples cured in water with 50/50 GGBS/LSP is 82 MPa at 28 days. The compressive strength of samples cured in water was the highest compared to ambient and 60°C. Investigations of the AAB microstructure showed gels formed in limestone paste samples, which means that the waste LSP can be used as a binder material. Second, the six (6) best-performing mixes from AAB paste mixes were selected for performing mortar mixes. All samples show flowabilities ranging from 110 to 148%. The rate of increasing strength between 7 and 28 days in water was higher than the ambient condition. The 28 days of compressive strength of the mortar sample with a GGBS/LSP ratio of 50/50 was 41.4 MPa in water curing. Also, the setting time and flowability of the mixtures increased with an increase of concentration of NaOH and decreased with increasing SS/SH ratio. The compressive strength of related mixes enhances the molarity of the NaOH and SS/SH ratio. Finally, the best three (3) performing mixes were selected from mortar mixes for performing concrete mixes. The results of slump and mixing temperature are within the normal range for all mixtures. The compressive strength of concrete cylinder 47.8 MPa at 90 days for 50/40 GGBS/LSP. The range of indirect tensile strength varies between 2.4 to 3.2 MPa at 90 days, and the modulus of elasticity varies between 22.6 to 33.3 GPa at 90 days for three concrete mixtures. Durability test results show that the range of water absorption varies between 2.6 to 3.8% at 28 and 90 days and the depth of water penetration ranges between 11.4 to 15.0 mm at 28 and 90 days, which is considered high durability comparing the permissible limits and all the remaining results of durability were within the permissible limits. Optimum performance was obtained for the AAC mixes MC 50/0/50-R2.5-M14 and MC 40/10/50-R2.5-M14. AAC with industrial wastes has significant advantages over OPC. First, it reduces carbon oxide emissions. Secondly, this thesis concentrates on AAC cured at water curing, which added useful experience in AAC concrete without extra heat for curing. LSP is available locally from asphalt manufacturing batch plants. A good percentage of LSP used in the AAC mix is considered significant as it is generally disposed of in landfills.
