English Abstract

The addition of chlorine to water for disinfection purposes could lead to disinfection by-products (DBP). The DBPs are formed due to the interaction between naturally present organic compounds and the chemical disinfectants in water. This leads to potential health problems. Halo acetic acids (HAA) are one of the significant products that formed during the chlorination process. Although these DBPs present at low concentrations, they require efficient further water treatment to eliminate these compounds due to their well-known carcinogenic effects. The electrochemical treatment has been identified as a practical approach toward the dehalogenation of DBP. Electrochemical treatment offers more active hydrogens and electrons required for the dehalogenation process than other water treatment methods. Catalytic the degradation level of HAA, six different electrodes have been synthesized. Ni-Foam was the main modified electrode. The encapsulation of the conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of Ni-BTC, Co-BTC, Ni-Co-MOF, Ni/Pd-BTC, Co/Pd-BTC and Ni-Co/Pd-BTC on the surface of the Ni foam was achieved via a solvothermal process using typical autoclave at various temperatures. The palladium particles, however, were impregnated into the surface after the solvothermal reaction. Multiple reaction cycles have been conducted to assess the stability and efficiency of the modified electrodes. The surface topography and the catalytic performances during the degradation process of HAAs at different potentials were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Cyclic voltammetry, respectively. To evaluate the catalytic performances before and after the electrocatalytic reactions, High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was applied. An excellent reduction level was achieved (near 99.9%). It provided solid stability with a negligible reduction to its overall performance toward the reaction rate.
