English Abstract

Increased concerns for the safety of the environment have resulted in a need for energy sources that are more environmentally friendly. A practical choice in this concern is wind energy. Moreover, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) provide optimistic solution for remote locations far from the systems of integrated grid. Nevertheless, they have specific limitations accompanied with various configurations. To overcome such pitfalls, it is necessary to optimize the overall performance and the starting torque of the turbine as these are among the most dominant issues. To achieve such goals, it is necessarily to investigate the aerodynamics of vertical axis wind turbines and their dynamic response to increase the generated power and to minimize the vibration. In the adopted approach, the turbine aerodynamics is modeled based on the so-called momentum models or streamtube theory. Performance analysis and parametric study is then conducted to effectively understand the effects of different operating conditions and parameters on the performance. The performance over different rotor solidities and aspect ratios is studied to find the best configuration of the turbine. By comparing different models, the merit of double multiple streamtube (DMST) model is established. Three different airfoils were investigated, and it is found that NACA0015 is advantageous among xvi NACA0012 and NACA0021. By studying the effect of different number of blades, it is found that a two and three-bladed rotor are both advantageous. To enhance the starting torque characteristics, the concept of variable blade pitch control is utilized. The effect of different fixed pitches is investigated, and it is found that using a fixed pitch of 2.5 could greatly enhance the performance though without improving the starting torque capacity. The effect of variable pitch angle of sinusoidal nature is then examined where four pitch schemes are studied and compared. The parameters of the sinusoidal functions have been optimized using the differential evolution (DE) algorithm with different cost functions. It is found that, using DE algorithm with the negative of the average power as a cost function has yielded best starting capacity compared to other studied cases though with reduced peak power coefficient. Moreover, for dynamic and structural analysis of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (SB-VAWT) blade, a simplified approach for energy equations for an Eulerian beam subjected to twist and transverse bending deflections is introduced. Reduced order modeling is then imposed based on the first modes of vibration for bend and twist, and the aerodynamics loads are estimated using the so-called DMST model. Then, the aerodynamic loads are introduced into the dynamic model of the system in the aeroelastic coupling where the structural displacements are fed back to update the aerodynamic loads, where average acceleration method was utilized for the numerical integration of the equations. It is found that structural displacement has little effect on the aerodynamic loads. SB-VAWTs experience high transverse displacement with a mean value of 156 cm.
