English Abstract

The applications of Functionally Graded (FG) sandwich ceramic-metal plate is rapidly increasing in several disciplines such as civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering. This thesis presents the dynamic and stability analysis of functionally graded (FG) “sandwich plate” resting on a viscoelastic foundation and exposed to hygrothermal conditions. An accurate solution is developed using high order shear deformation theory (HSDT), with only four unknowns being placed. The displacement field utilizes an indeterminate integral accompanied by a sinusoidal shape function to simulate the transverse shear deformation theory. The foundation's mathematical model followed the two-Pasternak coefficient model, with one more term being added to represent the damping effect. The sandwich plate is essentially composed of three layers. In this study, three different FG sandwich plate geometric analytical solutions regarding layer orders and composition were presented. The equations of motion were generated according to Hamilton’s principle. Thereafter, the analytical solution was based on Navier’s principle to solve the buckling temperature and natural frequency of a simply supported FG sandwich plate seated on a viscoelastic foundation. This thesis shows a parametric study of the effect of the damping coefficient along with the aspect ratio, moisture condition, power-law index, and temperature variation over the dynamic and buckling behavior of the FG “sandwich plate” resting on the viscoelastic foundation. A comprehensive comparison carried out that showed an excellent agreement of the newly proposed shear deformation theory with previously published works. The FG “Sandwich Plate” is examined considering three different scenarios of the panel’s arrangement. This work enhanced the understanding of the damping coefficient. The result shows as the value of the damping coefficient increases, the natural frequency of the FGSP is increasing as well as the thermal buckling. However, the degree of enhancement would depend on the plate’s configuration and the environmental conditions. Furthermore, Type B of FGSP where the configuration is FG in the face sheets with a metal core, showed the best response in terms of thermal buckling and natural frequency among all other types considered in this thesis.
