English Abstract

This thesis studies the bond performance between fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) and concrete. The debonding process is studied using experimental tests followed by a series of numerical simulations using the concrete damage plasticity method (CDPM) and cohesive zone modeling (CZM). Two concrete FRP assemblies are studied, namely a double-pull shear in which FRP strips of varying lengths are adhered to a concrete block and flexure tests on 12 concrete beams that are externally reinforced with different FRP widths and thicknesses to vary the FRP reinforcement ratio. This research also proposes the application of a steel fiber-reinforced concrete layer to replace the plain concrete in the bottom concrete layer for a group of flexural beam specimens to study its effectiveness of using steel fiber in improving the bond performance against crack-induced bond failures. Abaqus, a commercial package software, was used to model the numerical models CDPM and CZM. As the main objective of this thesis, the research validates the results of the numerical simulations using the experimental results. Another important objective in this thesis is to assess how adding steel fiber to the concrete affects its bond to the FRP sheet. The results of the double-shear tests are discussed in light of the damage mechanism, load-displacement, strain and stress distribution, bond-slip curve, and fracture energy. For the flexure beams, the results discussed are the cracks in the beams, load-deflection behavior, strain distribution along the FRP and the side of the beam, bond-slip curve and bond stress distribution.
