English Abstract

Carbonate matrix acidizing was extensively studied to capture the nature of wormhole initiation, propagation and breakthrough. Most of the work presented, however, was done on a linear (1D) scale using small cylindrical core plugs. Although, large scale radial experiments (3D) represent an excellent physical simulation for field practice, very few studies were performed due to the complexity of such work. Current large-scale matrix acidizing studies were limited to Indiana limestone rocks and plain nonretarded acid systems. This work is novel in its use of an emulsified acid system as the stimulation fluid on local Saudi limestone rocks. A stable emulsified acid system was developed using 15%wt. HCl in an acid-to-diesel ratio of 70:30 with a nano-clay emulsifier. Three experiments were performed using the developed emulsified acid on local quarried Saudi limestone blocks of 20"x16"x16" (hxwxl). After that, linear cores of 1.5" diameter were drilled from the corners of the blocks to obtain small plugs (of 6" length). Using these plugs, linear corefloods were performed with the emulsified acid. The block experiments were conducted at ambient temperature (below 31°C) and an acidizing curve was established for them as well as the linear corefloods. Results were analyzed to establish a relation between the radial and linear acidizing regimes to predict the radial behavior when only linear experiments are available.
