English Abstract

The importance of control and containment of corrosion/erosion in oil and gas industry cannot be overemphasized, given the serious impact of corrosion in production tubing, pipelines, and piping components. Corrosion monitoring is highly important in various industrial applications because it helps to discover early caution sign of corrosions and to determine processing parameters which could induce a corrosive environment. This research focuses on real time monitoring of internal wall condition of stainless steel elbow using novel Electric Field Mapping (EFM) system. The corrosion behavior of elbow pipe at various salt concentration, flow rates and flow duration was investigated under controlled environment. This research also characterizes scale sample extracted from the pipe internal wall after the experiment to explain the unanticipated increase in wall thickness observed. The experimental results show that high flow rates, long experimental duration, and medium salt concentration lead to a higher corrosion rate in elbow pipes. In addition to this, internal wall thickness of the elbow pipe reduces due to flow conditions the pipe is subjected to, and scale evolves on the pipe wall.
