English Abstract

Condensate blockage remains a critical problem in gas condensate reservoirs. During gas production, the condensate phenomenon occurs due to depletion of reservoir pressure below the dew point pressure. In tight reservoirs, the liquid banking causes an extreme damage and the hydrocarbon production might be stopped due to the liquid blockage. Gas injection is the most reliable and effective technique for mitigating the condensate banking. However, gas injection technique showed temporary condensate recovery and limited improvement in the reservoir deliverability for long-term applications. Also, at certain conditions, it might not be economical to use the gas cycling treatment, due to the growing uses of natural gas in different applications. This work presents a novel treatment for mitigating the condensate damage and improving the reservoir productivity using thermochemical fluids. The performance of thermochemical treatment in removing the condensate banking from different formations is studied. Experimental measurements and numerical simulation were carried out. The experimental measurements include fluid-fluid reaction, coreflooding experiments, NMR and capillary pressure measurements. Rock samples from sandstone, shale, and carbonate formations were used, the samples were characterized using NMR, XRD and routine core analysis. Chemical solutions that can generate pressure and temperature at certain conditions were used. Moreover, numerical simulation was conducted using CMG software. The changes in condensate behaviour due to the in-situ generated heat and pressure was analysed. In addition, a field scale simulation for applying thermochemical treatment to sustain the gas production and improve the ultimate gas recovery was performed. Results showed that treating the tight rocks with thermochemical fluids can enhance the gas productivity by 62%, reduce the capillary pressure by 47% and increase the absolute open flow by around 450%. The cumulative condensate recoveries are 72.97%, 68.09% and 43.37% for sandstone, carbonate, and shale rocks, respectively. The generated heat and pressure due to thermochemical treatment induced permanent fractures in the rock matrix. NMR and permeability measurements confirmed the creation of multiple fractures due to the thermochemical injection, the absolute permeability increased by more than 200 times. Also, the injected chemicals induced no formation damage, the used chemicals can stabilize the clay minerals and avoid clay swelling, fines migration or pore throat plugging. The simulation results showed that thermochemical treatment is better than the conventional gas injection techniques. The ultimate gas recovery using thermochemical injection is 89.1%, while the total gas recovery using gas injection is around 25.35%. The increase in gas recovery, during thermochemical injection, is attributed to the additional recovery mechanisms, which are the reductions in capillary pressure and condensate viscosity. The novelty of this work is that an effective treatment is presented to enhance the gas productivity for tight reservoirs. The experimental measurements and field scale simulation confirm the high potential of the proposed treatment for enhancing the gas production from tight reservoirs. Ultimately, this study will be very useful for increasing the hydrocarbon production from tight reservoirs. This work can lay the foundation for real field application of using thermochemical fluids to remove the condensate damage and sustain the gas production.
