English Abstract

In exploration seismology, data acquisition from the field is the first step. Hundreds of thousands of sensors known as geophones are spread across a large geographic area and connected with hundreds of kilometers of cables. The logistical cost of such an endeavor in terms of time and manpower is high. Future trend in seismic acquisition aims for an even higher number of geophones, leading to astronomically large aggregate data rates (more than 1 Gbps). A second trend is towards wireless geophone networks so that wiring costs and constraints can be alleviated. However, the wireless medium has a limited throughput per geophone. It is thus imperative that signal compression techniques be employed to reduce the data rate. This works deals with the analysis and design of such techniques. Specifically, lossy compression methods are considered, in which the decompressed signal is not the same as the original signal. Rate distortion tradeoff is assessed for such algorithms and is carried out based on physical-model of the acquisition process. Three new schemes are developed to achieve signal compression for seismic data. The first one is based on functional quantization---the use of infinite dimensional vectors or functions in a space to encode the sample paths of a random process. The second scheme is based on the tools from time-frequency analysis, specifically, Gabor frames generated by Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions. It is proved that such a dictionary of translations and modulations of the Prolates form a time-frequency frame. The final class of algorithms is based on image decomposition into texture and geometry parts and then separate compression of each.
