English Abstract

Tortuosity is a parameter that quantifies the degree of sinuosity of the channels within a pore matrix. In general, tortuosity is quantified by measuring the retarding effect of the porous matrix on various transport phenomena. It is considered as one of the key factors in characterizing the heterogonous structure of porous media and has significant implications for macroscopic transport flow properties characterized by parameters such as permeability, electrical resistivity and diffusivity. There are four widely-used types of tortuosity estimation based on some definitions: geometric, hydraulic, electric, and diffusive definitions. Nonetheless, relationships between these tortuosities remain unclear due to the lack of direct comparison on the same porous media. In this study, we used different techniques to quantify tortuosity on the same porous media: (1) Micro CT 3D imaging (2) Four-Electrodes resistivity measurements (3) Pulsed-Field Gradient PFG NMR. In addition, both sandstone and carbonate rock core plugs with different petrophysical parameters were studied to cover a wide range of the gaps in tortuosity concept. Results showed that tortuosity is inversely proportional with the permeability. A reasonable explanation is that higher permeability luxuries the flow of fluids meaning that its path was less restricted (low tortuosity) as compared to low permeability which results in restricting the fluid flow (high tortuosity). Micro CT was used to build 3D pore network model to better visualize the pore sizes and pore size distribution which is comparable to the result from T2 relaxation distribution. Carbonate samples demonstrate heterogenous pore structure as compared to sandstone samples. Although permeability values were comparable, tortuosity behavior for carbonate and sandstone samples was different when plotting different tortuosity definitions against each other. Different pore sizes and pore size distribution could be a reasonable explanation of the different behavior.
