English Abstract

This study analyzes and explains the factors controlling the deposition of aeolian setting, specifically dune and interdune facies interaction, extension and distribution. The aeolian system is considered one of the important hydrocarbon reservoirs in world, yet one of the complex subsurface systems. Therefore, it requires further studies to understand its stratigraphical complexity. This project study intends to investigate the geomorphology of dune and interdune settings in the Jafurah Sand Sea. The Jafurah Sand Sea is located east of Al Hassa city. It starts north of Dammam city and extends to Al jawb area at the south where it merges with the north side of Rub’ Al Khali. Al Jafurah sand sea covers around 40,000 km2. The specific objectives are to identify and document: 1) the spatial extend of modern interdune and dune bedforms. 2) study the aeolian dune and interdune deposits. 3) To construct facies depositional model of the aeolian system for the study area. 4) Investigating the aeolian bedform internal structure, using GPR. 5) study the relationship between the aeolian sub-environments (dune, interdune and sand sheet (sand flats)) from central to marginal areas. 6) study the relationship between aeolian system and adjoining systems (e.g., fluvial and marine systems). 7) study the effect of fluctuated water table on the development of the aeolian system. Morphological and geometrical attributes from various dunes and interdunes in the study areas were examined via satellite imagery provided by Google Earth Pro and ESRI Imagery software. Satellite imagery for the Jafurah sand sea reveals a varied range of dune types. Dunes within the study area mainly Barchanoid type which include Barchans and Barchanoid ridge. Typically, these types of dunes indicate unimodal wind regimes. Also, parabolic dune is common and stable due the presence of vegetation. Jafurah Sand Sea comprised of wind-laid sands. Therefore, wind deposits are the main drive of the of the of accumulation and distribution of the aeolian dunes, interdunes, sand sheets, and sabkhas (mud flats). Satellite imagery of Jafurah Sand Sea helped to understand the complexity of its morphology and reveal a varied range of dune types. Dunes within the study area mainly Barchanoid type which include Barchans and Barchanoid ridge. Also, parabolic dune is common which controlled by vegetation presence. Several depositional factors are controlling the current active desert setting of the Jafurah. First, Winds that have a major prevailing direction north to south reflecting a dune bedform migration path toward the South. Another important factor is the fluctuated water table, it played an important role on the development of the Jafurah desert depositional system. The Jafurah desert receives annual rainfall of 54-80 mm and within a high humidity belt, this gives rise to the interaction between aeolian and fluvial depositional system. High water table that affected by the Arabian Gulf tides actions, which also controls the system water table, system development and stability.
