English Abstract

Horizontal wells have been a common practice in oil and gas industry, playing a key role in better recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir. In weakly consolidated formations, these wells may encounter sand production along with hydrocarbons which may lead to several problems regarding wellbore stability, production time loss, and erosion of downhole & surface facilities. Sand production in wellbores can be linked to two physical phenomena; stress concentration along the wellbore causing mechanical instability and localized failure of the rock, secondly because of the hydro-mechanical forces causing internal and surface erosion, triggering the release of particles from rock surface, by the action of drag forces of produced matter. This failure mechanism increases manifold, especially in open hole completions, by high flow velocities of produced fluid and asymmetrical borehole geometry caused by drilling operations. Fluid flow modelling of these wells has been a keen research topic of various scholars since several years. Various simulation models for fluid flow in horizontal wells have been formulated in the past, calculating the pressure drop inside wellbore with prediction of the flow regime. This study focuses on development of a mathematical model to simulate fluid flow in horizontal wells with special focus on wellbore instabilities which arise due to the hydro-mechanical failure of the rock particles leading to surface erosion causing variation of borehole diameter.
