English Abstract

Concrete deterioration is noted in many structures that are exposed to severe service conditions. However, corrosion of reinforcing steel has been recognized as the number one durability problem in the whole world. This type of deterioration is primarily attributed to the chloride ions that may diffuse to the hardened concrete from the service environment. Hence, chloride diffusion coefficient should be considered as one of the most important parameters for predicting the time to initiation of reinforcement corrosion, which is important for both selecting proper protection system of existing reinforced concrete structures and durable design of new concrete structures or scheduling the maintenance and repair of deteriorating structures. Exposure temperature is an important factor that affects the chloride diffusion rate into concrete. Therefore, exposure temperature must be taken into consideration for predicting the service life of reinforced concrete structures. Hence, the aim of this research was to develop a correlation between short-term test results in the laboratory at varying exposure temperatures (22, 35, 50 and 60 °C) and the long-term performance of concrete under actual field conditions (i.e., for 10 years). Laboratory results indicate that the specimens exposed to 22 and 35 ᵒC showed relatively less chloride content, lower DL and chloride penetration depth compared to those exposed to 50 or 60 ᵒC. The DL of plain (Type I and V) cement mixes increased four times as the temperature was increased from 22 to 60 ᵒC, while in the blended cement mixes the increase was in the range of 2-3 times depending on the type of blended cement. Field data indicate that chloride concentration and chloride diffusion coefficient (DF) are influenced by the quality of the concrete. However, they are significantly affected by the exposure zone and exposure period. The highest DF was measured in the tidal zone while the lowest DF was measured in the above-ground zone. The performance of blended cement concretes was better than that of plain cement concretes in all the zones. Mathematical models were developed relating the field and laboratory data. Relationships between the predicted DF values in the field from DL values in the laboratory (using NT BUILD 492 and AASHTO T-277/ASTM C1202) were developed and R2 was in the range of 0.83 to 0.90 depending on the exposure zone. Furthermore, correlation for predicting DF in the field from DL in the laboratory at different exposure temperatures (using NT BUILD 443 test) was developed and R2 was in the range of 0.83 to 0.99 depending on the exposure zone and mix quality. The relationships developed in this study will form the basis for the prediction of optimum scheduling time for repair and maintenance of concrete structures exposed to the harsh environments.
