English Abstract

A more general average system frequency prediction formula has been proposed in this thesis. The frequency formula predicts the post disturbance minimum frequency and its time of occurrence following a major disturbance such as loss of a block of generating units or major tie lines. This closed form frequency formula is in terms of the power plant parameters, disturbance sizes, and load shedding relay set-points. It also predicts the time at which load is shed and real electrical and mechanical power of generators as a function of time. The results of frequency prediction formula have been compared with the average system frequency obtained by simulation. This frequency formula was incorporated in a fast decoupled load flow program to produce a dynamic load flow which was used to perform loss of generation / load contingency analysis. Two frequency performance indices have been proposed for comparison and ranking of critical contingencies. Several contingencies analysis were performed and these contingencies were ranked. A rate of change of frequency dependence load shedding scheme was designed and compared with one of the existing load shed schemes.
