English Abstract
This thesis investigates slicing and toolpath generation strategies for multi-axis robotic additive manufacturing (RAM) with 6-degree-of-freedom industrial manipulators. The aim is to develop an integrated workflow from STL geometry to robot motion and to evaluate how different slicing strategies influence toolpath characteristics, including path continuity, geometric conformity, orientation behavior, and robotic executability, using quantitative criteria, simulation, dry-run execution, and physical printing. Four slicing strategies are compared: (i) conventional planar slicing as a baseline, (ii) sweep-path-based slicing driven by a user-provided guide path, (iii) central-path-driven slicing, where the guiding path is extracted automatically from the model, and (iv) voxel-skeleton-based slicing, where the centerline is obtained through voxelization and skeletonization. Slicing and toolpath generation are implemented in MATLAB and verified in RoboDK Software, and all four strategies are physically printed on a UR5e manipulator through a custom Python-based execution pipeline, with dry-run validation also performed on two additional industrial robots. The evaluation on four benchmark geometries shows that the strategies converge on straight prismatic parts and separate once the centerline curves. The planar baseline is fastest and continuous but cannot follow curved walls, and its printed part sags at unsupported overhangs. The sweep-path-based method is continuous by construction but requires the guide path as input. The central-path-driven method loses continuity on curved geometry due to its contour ordering stage. The voxel-skeleton-based method is the only automatic strategy that remains continuous and accurate throughout, at the highest computational cost, and produces the cleanest printed part. In conclusion, the research quantifies the trade-offs between accuracy, continuity, orientation stability, and computational cost, validates the virtual comparison against physically printed parts, and provides a systematic framework for assessing slicing strategies in robotic additive manufacturing
