English Abstract

The rapid growth of space cooling demand in hot-climate regions has led to increased electricity consumption, peak power demand, and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in Saudi Arabia where air conditioning dominates residential energy use. Solar-driven absorption cooling offers a promising alternative to conventional vapor-compression (VC) systems by utilizing low-grade thermal energy and reducing reliance on grid electricity. This study presents the modeling and evaluation of a small-scale solar-driven single-effect lithium bromide–water (LiBr–H₂O) absorption chiller. Detailed thermodynamic models of the absorption chiller and solar collector subsystems were developed using Engineering Equation Solver (EES) and validated against published experimental studies, with average deviation below 5%. The absorption chiller achieved a thermal coefficient of performance around 0.75 under typical summer operating conditions. The validated models were applied to two representative case studies in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: a meeting room and a small residential house. Flat plate collectors (FPC) and evacuated tube collectors (ETC) were evaluated and compared. Environmental analysis shows that the ETC-based solar absorption system reduces total annual CO₂ emissions by 77% in both case studies, while the FPC-based system achieves emission reductions of 66% and 69% for the meeting room and residential house, respectively, compared to conventional VC systems. Economic assessment indicates that the FPC-based system is not economically feasible under current electricity tariffs, exhibiting excessively long payback periods. In contrast, the ETC-based system achieves discounted payback periods of 29.0 years for the meeting room and 33.4 years for the residential house, which can be reduced to 14.5–16.7 years when a 50% capital subsidy is applied. These results demonstrate the technical feasibility and significant environmental benefits of solar-driven absorption cooling while highlighting the importance of policy support to improve economic viability in hot-climate regions.
