English Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are significantly being implemented in critical applications, including healthcare, military surveillance, and environmental monitoring. However, guaranteeing secure and energy-efficient data transmission is an important difficulty in WSNs. This challenge becomes more critical in the presence of corrupted or malfunctioning nodes. To address this challenge, this thesis presents a unique Deep Learning-Enhanced Trust-Aware Clustering Protocol (DL-TAC). The proposed method integrates a trust evaluation mechanism into the traditional Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. The network is modeled as a clustered WSN. Nodes elect cluster heads (CHs) that relay aggregated data to a central base station. In contrast to traditional approaches, the system includes dynamic adversarial behavior. Malicious nodes exhibit evolving attack patterns such as packet dropping, sequence manipulation, blackhole, and grayhole attacks. Trust is regarded as an operational variable that directly influences both CH election choices and the decision to join the group following a specified preparatory period. Comprehensive experiments are performed across various operational modes. These include clean LEACH, aggressive LEACH, and trust-aware variants. The goal is to evaluate the impact of malicious behavior and the effectiveness of trust integration. Experimental results show that DL-TAC protocol reduces malicious cluster head exposure from 20.7% to 8.8%, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 57% compared to baseline LEACH. In addition, it improves packet delivery ratio by approximately 7–10% under attack conditions, while maintaining competitive energy efficiency. Furthermore, the network lifetime is extended by approximately 15–20%, indicating improved survivability. However, the developed model presents a trade-off between robustness and generalization, especially in the context of distribution shift scenarios. Overall, this study illustrates that integrating deep learning into trust estimates can improve the security and reliability of clustered WSNs, emphasizing the necessity of matching training data with deployment settings to guarantee consistent performance.
