English Abstract
In this work, a multi-stage membrane distillation system was numerically examined to evaluate the impact of multi-staging on reducing temperature and concentration polarization effect on permeate flux. Additionally, the impact of co-current and counter-current flow arrangements on system performance was evaluated. Numerical simulation of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) was conducted, comparing a single-stage system with a 500 mm channel length to a five-stage configuration. Results showed a significant performance improvement of up to 26.3% in the five-stage system. The study also indicates that increasing the number of stages for co-current operation has a greater impact on permeate flux improvement than for counter-current operation. While the counter-current configuration exhibited better initial performance in a single stage, the difference in total permeate flux between the two configurations diminished as the number of stages increased. Furthermore, the effect of multi-staging under different inlet conditions—including salt mass concentration, feed temperature, and velocity—was investigated, with results showing flux improvements exceeding 30% in specific cases. In parallel, a novel vacuum membrane distillation design incorporating a helical strake on a vacuum-tube membrane was proposed. The design aimed to improve permeate flux by reducing polarization effects at the membrane surface. Its performance was investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamics. A three-dimensional CFD model was developed in Ansys Fluent 2021. The validity of the model was verified using experimental results reported in the literature. Various helical-strake designs were evaluated based on the number of turns, with the results showing a significant permeate flux improvement of up to 44%. Strake height was identified as a critical optimization parameter, while inlet feed velocity and temperature were found to strongly influence system performance. Finally, a CFD model was developed to predict gypsum fouling in DCMD. A framework was established to numerically simulate the DCMD system with gypsum prediction. To validate the model, an experimental setup was designed and built for comparing experimental permeate flux versus time across different initial feed temperatures, flow rates, and gypsum concentrations. Results show good agreement between the CFD model and experimental data. Additionally, this study analyzed the patterns of fouling, comparing experimental observations with simulation results.
