English Abstract

This thesis studies the control of forced Duffing oscillations using adaptive, passive--active, and Koopman-based methods. The Duffing oscillator is used as the main model because it captures important nonlinear vibration behavior, including amplitude jumps, hysteresis, multiple steady responses, sensitivity to disturbances, and motion across different regions of the phase space. These features make control difficult when the system is noisy, when the active control force must be reduced, or when a data-driven predictor must remain accurate over long horizons. Four studies are presented. The first compares PID control, fixed-gain sliding-mode control, and adaptive sliding-mode control for a fully actuated double Duffing oscillator under matched stochastic forcing. The adaptive controller improves tracking while avoiding a fixed conservative switching gain. The second study combines positive position feedback with sliding-mode control and uses phase coordination to reduce the harmonic control-force demand. The third study combines a tuned mass damper with sliding-mode control and uses harmonic-balance analysis to tune the absorber for lower active control demand over a prescribed amplitude range. The fourth study develops a state-space partitioned Koopman predictive-control framework for the forced Duffing oscillator. The partitioned model improves long-horizon prediction and closed-loop behavior when the training data are noisy. Overall, the thesis shows that Duffing oscillator control benefits from selecting the control structure according to the main difficulty of the problem.
