English Abstract

Electrical wiring design remains one of the most time-consuming and error-sensitive components of building services engineering. Designers often rely on manual routing, 2D drafting or disconnected workflows that require iterative revisions, repeated measurements, and extensive coordination across disciplines. While BIM has transformed building representation and multidisciplinary collaboration, there is still no complete framework that can automatically generate optimal electrical routing directly inside a BIM environment, simulate real installation conditions, and support decision-making through computational intelligence. The absence of automated, BIM-native routing tools results in increased design time, routing inefficiencies, and limited capacity to evaluate multiple alternative path configurations during early design stages. This thesis presents a Revit-integrated electrical routing system that introduces a new automated workflow for circuit planning using BIM-extracted spatial data and graph-theory-based connectivity modelling. The system is composed of two independent routing engines, each serving a different function. The first component is a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, developed externally to Revit, which performs exact optimization on a discretized routing graph generated from BIM geometry. This solver does not run inside the plug-in; instead, it operates as a standalone optimization module and returns mathematically optimal routing paths only at the graph level. These MILP solutions act as benchmarking ground-truth, establishing the lower-bound cable length for comparison against metaheuristic performance. The second component and the core of the Revit plug-in is a continuous-space metaheuristic routing engine. This one is fully implemented inside Revit through the Revit API, implemented entirely through the Revit API. This routing module incorporates a layered algorithmic structure combining Genetic Algorithm (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Simulated Annealing (SA), Jump Point Search (JPS), Theta* smoothing, and rectilinear refinement, allowing rapid generation and refinement of electrical routing paths. It operates using geometric pathfinding, directed-graph connectivity, evolutionary permutation search, and 3D ceiling-cavity navigation to produce smooth, installation-ready cable paths that reflect real construction practice. Unlike the MILP, this system does not work on graph abstraction but on continuous spatial geometry, making it practical, scalable, and visually integrated with the BIM model. The two approaches were tested on 46 routing problems across 9 circuits, ranging from simple to multi-room routing environments. In the first approach, an MILP model was formulated and solved using exact optimization algorithms (via Gurobi solver) to compute globally optimal wiring paths over the BIM-derived routing graph. The MILP achieved 0–1% optimality gap for most small and medium-scale problems, confirming its ability to find provably optimal or near-optimal solutions. However, as circuit size increased, the solver continued without convergence and an optimality gap remained strictly greater than 0, even when computation time was increased to 18,000 seconds (and up to 60,000 seconds for few tests). This confirms that the MILP model is mathematically exact in formulation, but computationally constrained by graph size and therefore, unable to guarantee global optimality for real-scale problems. In contrast, the Revit-embedded metaheuristic plug-in generated cable paths in 0.02–3 seconds, however, being 11-13% longer routes relative to MILP graph solutions. . The narrow spread between the 25th and 75th percentile values reflects strong route consistency across repetitions, while real-time processing validates its suitability for iterative BIM design work. Overall, exact optimization (MILP) ensures mathematical optimality for benchmark evaluation, whereas the metaheuristic plug-in provides practical, scalable, and construction-ready routing performance for real-world BIM applications. This research contributes a framework capable of automating electrical circuit routing within BIM, reducing manual drafting effort, shortening decision cycles, and improving overall routing reliability. It establishes the foundation for future extension into multi-circuit routing, load-based conductor selection, automated phase balancing, cable-tray placement, and integration with on-site digital fabrication workflows. The system demonstrates that electrical circuit design can be both mathematically optimized and practically constructible when optimization intelligence is embedded directly into BIM.
