English Abstract

Induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field has become one of the most important examples worldwide of seismic response associated with long-term hydrocarbon production. Although the general relationship between reservoir depletion and fault reactivation is well established, the timing and spatial distribution of seismicity remain highly variable across the field, indicating that production alone does not fully explain the observed behavior. This thesis investigates induced seismicity in Groningen through two complementary approaches: a multi-scale statistical analysis of the production–seismicity relationship, and a structural analysis of the fault architecture surrounding the producing wells. The first part of the research evaluates the statistical relationship between annual gas production and induced seismicity at both field-wide and well-centered scales. Production data from NLOG and earthquake data from the KNMI catalogue were analyzed using Pearson and Spearman correlations, including lagged comparisons to test for delayed seismic response. The results show that the production–seismicity coupling in Groningen is strongly time-dependent and spatially heterogeneous. At the field scale, same-year correlations are weak, while stronger correlations emerge when production leads seismicity by approximately 3–4 years, indicating a delayed response to depletion. At the local scale, wells display contrasting behaviors, including immediate, delayed, weak, and absent seismic responses. The second part of the research investigates whether these contrasting statistical patterns can be explained by differences in local fault architecture. Using a 2D fault framework derived from the Groningen static model, the fault networks around the wells were analyzed within 5 km buffers using complementary topological and geometrical methods. The topological analysis quantified connectivity and fracture intensity through node–branch relationships, while the geometrical analysis evaluated fault density and misalignment. The results show that wells with immediate seismic response are generally associated with denser, more connected, and relatively well-aligned fault systems, whereas delayed-response wells are characterized by more misaligned, less dense, and less connected networks. Wells with weak or absent seismicity do not simply correspond to disconnected systems, indicating that connectivity alone is not sufficient to explain the seismic behavior. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that induced seismicity in Groningen is controlled by the interaction between depletion-driven stress changes and local fault architecture. The results show that Groningen does not behave as a single uniform geomechanical system, but as a structurally heterogeneous reservoir in which the timing and strength of seismic response vary according to local fault-network properties. By integrating statistical production–seismicity analysis with structural characterization, this work provides a more complete framework for understanding induced seismicity in mature gas fields and highlights the importance of incorporating fault geometry and topology into seismic hazard assessment, reservoir management, and future subsurface decision making.
