English Abstract
This study investigated the environmental performance of smartphones within a circular economy framework using a scenario-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Smartphones are a rapidly growing part of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, and their environmental impacts continue to rise. This is mainly driven by material intensity, energy use, and frequent device replacement. Although circular strategies such as reuse, repair, and recycling are widely discussed, there is still limited research that evaluates these approaches within a single, consistent framework. A cradle-to-grave LCA was conducted using a functional unit defined as the provision of smartphone functionality over a six-year period. Ten scenarios (R0–R9) were developed based on the 9R circular economy framework, covering strategies from conventional linear use to reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, repurposing, recycling, and energy recovery. The life cycle inventory was developed using primary data from physical dismantling and component-level mass measurement of a representative smartphone, supported by secondary data from the ecoinvent database and modeled in SimaPro. Environmental impacts were evaluated using the ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (H) and Endpoint (H) method across multiple categories. The baseline scenario (R0) yielded a total global warming potential (GWP) of 55.57 kg CO₂ eq, with the use phase (28.8 kg CO₂-eq) and manufacturing phase (24.07 kg CO₂-eq) accounting for the largest shares. Across all scenarios, reducing electricity consumption (R2) delivered the lowest environmental impacts, achieving a GWP of 52.54 kg CO₂-eq and consistent reductions across nearly all impact categories. Lifetime extension strategies, such as reuse, repair, refurbishment, and remanufacturing, offered moderate benefits by distributing manufacturing burdens over a longer service period, though refurbishment and remanufacturing introduced trade-offs due to additional material and processing requirements. Repurposing (R7) produced the highest impacts due to increased electricity consumption during extended stationary operation. End-of-life (EoL) pathways such as recycling and energy recovery showed comparatively limited influence at the full life cycle scale. Sensitivity analysis identified electricity grid carbon intensity as the most influential parameter; replacing the Saudi Arabian grid with the European average reduced GWP by nearly 50%, though this shift redistributed burdens toward other categories such as ionizing radiation and human carcinogenic toxicity. Reducing operational electricity consumption emerged as the single most effective and reliable lever for lowering environmental impacts across the smartphone life cycle. The analysis further reveals that circular strategies do not consistently show lower environmental burdens; their performance depends on the trade-off between avoided production and the additional materials and processes they introduce, underscoring the necessity of evaluating such strategies through a comprehensive life cycle approach.
