English Abstract
Repeated close-contact bedside assessments can increase clinician exposure during infectious-disease outbreaks, while remote assessment requires sensors to be positioned safely and repeatably above a supine patient. Existing systems lack an integrated over-bed platform combining low moving mass, safe design, and constrained motion control. This thesis develops and evaluates, through modeling and simulation, an over-bed suspended cable-driven clinical robot (CDCR) intended as a positioning platform above the patient’s bed for future diagnostic sensors. The robot comprises three pairs of parallel cables and a passive spring-supported telescopic rod, providing three translational degrees of freedom while constraining platform rotation and maintaining cable preload. Kinematic, static, stiffness, and dynamic models were formulated; geometric and tension-feasible workspaces were evaluated under cable-tension, rod-length, and joint-swing constraints; and atlas-based geometric optimization was performed using global actuation and constraint indices. A task-space computed-torque proportional-derivative controller with inverse-dynamics tension commands was then assessed in MATLAB using planned trajectories. For the selected 1,000 mm diameter and 250 mm-high task workspace, optimization yielded a base radius of 841.0793 mm, a robot height of 971.4051 mm, and a moving-platform radius of 74.4719 mm. Reported commanded cable-pair tensions remained positive between 33.822 and 47.157 N, while the maximum and root-mean-square Cartesian position errors were 0.027731 and 0.002815 m, respectively. These results establish the simulation-level feasibility of integrating workspace-aware design, spring-assisted tension maintenance, and constrained trajectory control for repeatable over-bed positioning. They provide a foundation for a future prototype and sensor-equipped system; hardware, diagnostic sensing, and clinical performance were not validated.
