English Abstract
This study presents a multiscale and multifrequency investigation of the elastic behavior of bioturbated carbonate strata in the Khanasir Member of the Aruma Formation, central Saudi Arabia, using enlarged open and filled Thalassinoides burrow systems as an analog. The investigation integrates field observations, petrographic analysis, XRD/XRF mineralogical characterization, CT-scan imaging, porosity measurements, and P-wave velocity acquisitions spanning ultrasonic laboratory to outcrop seismic frequencies, complemented by a Differential Effective Medium (DEM) rock physics model. Results reveal that velocity variations across all measurement scales are primarily controlled by two factors: host matrix properties, including mineralogy, pore type, and elastic stiffness, and the presence of fractures, with the open-burrow strata being significantly less fractured than the filled-burrow strata. The two burrow systems exhibit a fundamental mineralogical contrast: the open-burrow host matrix consists entirely of calcite with a tight microporous fabric (core plug Vp: 5081-6200 m/s, porosity: 2.1-14.7%, average EPAR: 0.21), while the filled-burrow host matrix is predominantly dolomite with associated palygorskite clay minerals and a well-developed intercrystalline pore network (core plug Vp: 2516-3925 m/s, porosity: 13.4-22.7%, average EPAR: 0.063). At the cubic sample scale, the open-burrow interval is dominated by the fast path effect, with two of three samples plotting above the EPAR = 1 curve and preserving an average Vp of 5660 m/s comparable to the core plug scale, while the filled-burrow samples exhibit a significantly lower average Vp of 2617 m/s, further reduced by the presence of fractures. At the seismic scale, the open-burrow interval yields an average Vp of 4379 m/s, contrasting sharply with 1578 m/s for the filled-burrow interval, confirming that fractures become the dominant control on elastic behavior at this scale. The DEM model successfully reproduced the velocity behavior across all measurement scales for both burrow systems, with corrected velocities accounting for burrow geometry and fracture effects in close agreement with measured values. An EPAR of 0.1 is identified as the threshold separating good from poor reservoir quality. The study demonstrates that sonic and seismic data can effectively differentiate between the two burrow systems based on their contrasting velocity, porosity, and acoustic impedance signatures, providing a robust multiscale framework for the characterization of bioturbated carbonate reservoirs.
