English Abstract

Water scarcity in arid coastal regions has intensified the search for energy-efficient desalination strategies that can sustainably meet growing demand. Blending seawater (SW) with treated wastewater (TWW) from membrane bioreactor (MBR) plants before reverse osmosis (RO) treatment offers a promising approach to reducing feed salinity, lowering energy consumption, and improving resource recovery. However, identifying the optimal blend ratio is complex, as it must simultaneously satisfy membrane safety constraints, permeate quality standards, and energy efficiency objectives across variable seasonal water quality and membrane ageing. This study presents a data-driven optimization framework for identifying the optimal SW–TWW blending ratio for a coastal RO desalination system in Saudi Arabia. The methodology integrates four stages: feedwater feasibility screening, RO process simulation using AquaGRID across 300 Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) scenarios, Automatic Relevance Determination Gaussian Process (ARD-GP) surrogate modelling, and constrained optimization via a hybrid Differential Evolution–Sequential Quadratic Programming (DE–SLSQP) approach evaluated over three membrane ages (beginning, middle, and end of life). Blends with seawater fractions (SW%) below 35% were excluded as they violated the phosphate feasibility constraint. Among the surrogate models compared, ARD-GPR achieved the highest accuracy across all three predicted outputs — permeate TDS, permeate boron, and specific energy consumption (SEC) with R² ≥ 0.982 in 10-fold cross-validation. Deterministic optimization identified SW% = 35% as the energy-optimal blending ratio at all membrane ages, with optimal recovery decreasing from 60% at beginning of life (BOL) to 52.3% at end of life (EOL) as the boron constraint became active. SEC increased from 1.80 kWh/m³ at BOL to 2.05 kWh/m³ at EOL, a 14% rise driven by the recovery reduction. Across 500 annual uncertainty scenarios, robust envelope analysis revealed that no fixed operating point achieves 95% boron compliance against the Saudi 0.5 mg/L drinking-water standard at EOL, with maximum compliance of 82.6% at SW% = 35%; under the WHO 2.4 mg/L drinking-water guideline, however, full compliance is achieved across the entire SW% range, with the energy-optimal robust point at SW% = 35% (median SEC = 1.89 kWh/m³). The framework defines a clear engineering boundary: static blending optimization is sufficient under the WHO guideline but cannot meet the Saudi standard at end of life under realistic annual variability. Pretreatment phosphate capacity, rather than RO process variables, is the binding constraint on energy savings; meeting the Saudi limit requires either dynamic real-time control, post-treatment such as a second RO pass or boron-selective polishing, or operation under jurisdictions adopting the less stringent WHO guideline.
