English Abstract

This thesis provides a theoretical investigation on advanced heat-pump-assisted HDH desalination systems as a pathway to improve thermal utilization, reduce electrical energy demand, and support renewable, stand-alone freshwater production. Two integrated HDH-HP configurations are developed and evaluated. The first is a water-heated closed-air open-water HDH desalination system thermally driven by a heat pump and electrically supplied by a stand-alone photovoltaic-battery system. The second is a modified air-heated closed-air open-water HDH system in which the heat-pump condenser heats the humid air stream after the humidifier and before the dehumidifier, while the evaporator cools the seawater stream before dehumidification. For both systems, three heat-pump modes are compared under identical desalination-side conditions: a baseline vapor-compression heat pump, an ejector-expansion heat pump, and an ejector-subcooled heat pump with an internal heat exchanger. The water-heated system is assessed thermodynamically, electrically, and economically, while the modified air-heated system is extended to include first-law analysis, second-law exergy analysis, life-cycle assessment, specific emissions, and solar-electric exergy evaluation. The results demonstrate that the ejector-subcooled heat-pump mode consistently provides the best performance, followed by the ejector-expansion mode and then the baseline heat pump. For the water-heated system, the maximum gained output xix ratio reached about 8.1 under the main operating conditions and increased to 15.08 under ideal humidifier and dehumidifier effectiveness. The specific electrical energy consumption approached 69.6 kWh per cubic meter of freshwater at the best operating condition, while the PV-battery subsystem supplied nearly all annual electrical demand, with shortfalls limited to localized pre-sunrise periods in late summer and early autumn. The economic analysis showed that freshwater cost decreased with plant lifetime and reached about 5.39, 5.16, and 5.08 cent/L at 20 years for the baseline, ejector-expansion, and ejector-subcooled modes, respectively. For the modified air-heated system, the highest investigated seawater flow rate produced peak GOR values of about 6.4, 7.7, and 8.2 for the baseline, ejector-expansion, and ejector-subcooled modes, respectively. The corresponding minimum specific electrical energy consumption decreased from about 105 to 89 and 83 kWh per cubic meter of freshwater, while daily freshwater production increased from about 425 to 452 and 460 L/day. The exergy analysis showed that total exergy destruction decreased from about 1.84 kW for the baseline heat pump to 1.52 kW for the ejector-expansion mode and 1.43 kW for the ejector-subcooled mode, mainly because the throttling-related irreversibility was strongly reduced. The life-cycle assessment confirmed that these thermodynamic gains translate into lower environmental burdens. Global warming impact decreased from 46.20 to 38.32 and 30.44 kg carbon dioxide equivalent per cubic meter of freshwater, while fossil resource scarcity, fine particulate matter formation, terrestrial acidification, NOx emissions, and PM10 emissions followed the same ranking. Overall, the thesis demonstrates that advanced heat-pump integration, especially ejector expansion combined with subcooling, can significantly improve HDH desalination performance. When coupled with PV-battery operation, the proposed systems provide a technically promising route for renewable, decentralized freshwater production in high-solar regions.
